His name has become synonymous with the tango. His music has influenced the musical landscape of that style so profoundly, that the ramifications of his creative talent resonated in other musical styles, and moved artists of the calibre of Gidon Kremer and Yo-Yo Ma to pay homage to his memory. Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) – son of tango criollo, father of nuevo tango; Astor Piazzolla – a visionary who questioned the orthodoxy of the old guard, and infused the static tango form with new darkness, danger, and complexity without losing touch with his music’s popular roots.
